Reversibility in Radioactive Waste Management

Viewpoints on the best national options for the management of radioactive waste remain controversial, and there is little overall consensus even amongst technical experts. Pragmatically any future disposal facility in the UK is likely to operate as a retrievable store in the first instance, perhaps for several tens or even hundreds of years. This submission to the UK Government's Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) examines the advantages of disposal reversibility, keeping the option to retrieve wastes open for future generations of society when better clean-up technologies might become available. For example developments in nanotechnology and high speed supercomputing could have a major impact on nuclear clean-up blurring the line between waste storage and disposal. Download Briefing Now
