The decommissioning of old nuclear power stations creates large volumes of low level radioactive waste. This report for the British Government's Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM), reviews approximate cost estimates for developing near-surface disposal facilities for low level waste co-located at each nuclear reactor site in the UK. The review also considers the potential economies of scale that may be possible by developing a few centralised national or regional disposal facilities and the potential impact on the costs of an accelerated reactor decommissioning and clean-up programme.
